(Truth is...)
This past Friday we were all touched, hurt, angered, and
saddened by the news of what took place in Connecticut. More than twenty
families are without loved ones for a reason that is still unknown. We can all
speculate why we believe these events occurred but that is not going to bring
back these innocent lives.
What I’ve
realized is that we take our childhoods for granted. I know there are people
who take their lives for granted as they play Russian Roulette everyday but our
childhood is just as precious. Both those children deceased and survivors of
this painstaking event lost something on Friday. Their innocence was taken and
they will never get it back.
As we
all prepare for the New Year and sit down and make resolutions we need to band
together as a country and make a resolution. Two things we need to work toward
as a country for 2013. We need to talk about mental health and revaluate laws
and policies pertaining to gun control. Let’s get one thing straight; therapy
can no longer be a taboo subject in our homes. There is too much at stake for
all of us…this is totally a different subject but who would think you would
need to discuss suicide with children under the age of ten? But this is a
typical occurrence as bullying is more prevalent. As individuals we hold too
much in and just like a pop shaken up and opened we explode and the outcome is
never good.
This
year our nation has experienced too many events where guns have been the cause
of ones demise. There has to be a way to protect ourselves and our families
without resorting to violence. Incidents like this only make people more afraid
or take precautions into their own hands and try to control their environments
but with the wrong means. We need a super hero! And we need him now.
A
mother commented that her five year old son asked why she was sad and
teary-eyed. Her response was that a man did something very wrong to a lot of
people today. The young child looked up at his mother and said well, Batman,
Spiderman, and the Power Rangers can fix it and save the day. How profound
right? Where have all the super heroes gone? Have they been captured and that’s
why we see events like in Connecticut, or in Oregon at the Mall? Or are these
super heroes tired of fighting by themselves?
Maybe it’s
time for all of us to help Batman, Spiderman, and the Power Ranger and be our
own Captain America. Many have said be the change you want to see….the time has
come before but we have the floor now to answer back and to do it for all those
who lost their innocence to an event we cannot even put a motive to. Ignite
your inner super hero in 2013 and show the world that we are agents of change.
